Sony to Skip E3 2019 for the First Time Ever

In something of a bad sign for E3 2019, Sony has announced that it will not be in attendance at the annual convention. This decision marks the first time in the company's 24-year history that it has not had a presence at E3. "As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community." the company said in a statement. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 & can't wait to share our plans with you."

The PlayStation Experience has been a mainstay of E3 for the past four years and has been a unique way to "bring fans together" during the event.

Some see the news as a bad sign for Sony in that it appears to show a "potential lack of upcoming titles". Sony's Chairman Shawn Layden said earlier this year, "Now that we have Spiderman out the door, we're looking down in 2019 to games like Dreams and Days Gone but we wouldn't have enough to bring people all together in some location in North America to have that event. We don't want to set expectations really high and then not deliver on it."

It will remain to be seen whether or not other gaming "giants" like Nintendo and Microsoft will attend. We'll be keeping a close eye on the situation.
