Smite 2 has announced that its next beta stage will make the god-themed MOBA free to play and open to all players starting on Tuesday, January 14.
The game is shifting from an alpha to beta stage at that point, with access moving from paid or limited to entirely open free-to-play. The original Smite was also free-to-play, with a similar unlock system to League of Legends, except with a specific pack similar to Smite 2’s that would unlock all gods.
For those who’re playing already, Hi-Rez has already put out the Open Beta 1 patch notes, which include Aladdin and some major matchmaking changes.
Previously, there were other limited access opportunities for Smite 2’s alpha stages. The primary one was to buy an access pack, which goes from $30 to $100; any purchase lets players play as any “god” characters forever throughout Smite 2’s lifetime, and varying tiers give different cosmetics.
Most recently for free players, aspiring players could join by watching Smite 2 for an hour on Twitch, which would then give a beta key drop. However, this only lets players try the characters in the free rotation.
Smite 2 has been fairly open and apace in its development, with its most recent “Gods” released in early December. MMORPG also chatted with its Executive Producer about the Alpha progress back at Gamescom.
