In a recent interview with Chinese publication Zhihu, FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed that Elden Ring’s upcoming expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, will be the game’s “first and last DLC.”
Miyazaki also added that the team decided to release the expansion’s content as one single package over smaller, multiple releases in order to preserve the game’s grand sense of scale and exploration.
The game director also touched on some sort of “level element” mechanic that will allow the expansion to account for players having fully leveled characters with potentially multiple completed New Game+ runs. The mechanic, which players can opt into, will constrain players’ power levels in some way in order to maintain the right amount of challenge in the new content.
While Miyazaki’s comments confirm that the FromSoftware team is indeed moving onto other projects following the release of Shadow of the Erdtree, he didn’t shut the door on a potential sequel. The team doesn’t currently have any plans to make a DLC or sequel, instead suggesting that “there could well be something in the future.”
Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree will release on Friday, June 21 for the PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, as well as Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S platforms.
