Acclaimed RPG Sea of Stars just got a big update, adding local co-op, a combat rework, an overhauled prologue, difficulty presets, and even a brand new cinematic.
The update, Dawn of Equinox, is like a bridge to the game’s upcoming free DLC, Throes of The Watchmaker. While that is set to arrive in early 2025, the team is calling Dawn of Equinox “the definitive edition” of the game. Sabotage Studio co-founder Thierry Boulanger, in a press release, says “the overwhelming love and support they’ve shown us ever since we announced Sea of Stars is what gave our team the means to return to the project and refine it even more”. The game has reached 5 million players.
The game’s prologue has been revamped to directly include the younger heroes instead of flashbacks to an earlier time. There's also a brand new cutscene, “Paths on Water” to enhance one pivotal moment.
Local co-op is now available for the Sea of Stars story in its entirety. Now up to three can play the adventure together. Along with this, there is a new co-op timed hits combat mechanic to master. There is a combat overhaul which makes some changes too.
Mystery Locks is a new element that opens up a gameplay loop around learning how to break enemies’ spells every time you encounter a new spell type. Another new addition is reveal, which is something added to some characters’ special skills. After a battle, some combo points will remain, offering opportunities to open different encounters, test damage types, or more to figure out those new locks. With these changes, combat also got a new balancing pass.
Dawn of Equinox also adds difficulty setting presets using Relics. There are also new Relics, including a Speedrunner mode Relic and an improved Parrot Relic to round things out. There’s language support for Quebecois too.
