Rockstar announced it has acquired Cfx.re, one of the largest roleplaying teams in Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, though the exact specifics of the acquisition aren't disclosed.
The announcement was made this morning, with Rockstar stating that the team behind two of the biggest roleplay communities in their games, FiveM and RedM, are now officially a part of Rockstar Games.
"Over the past few years, we've watched with excitement as Rockstar’s creative community have found new ways to expand the possibilities of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, particularly through the creation of dedicated roleplay servers," Rockstar Games said in a statement this morning. "As a way to further support those efforts, we recently expanded our policy on mods to officially include those made by the roleplay creative community."
Roleplay communities in RPGs and online games are nothing new, though communities in games like Grand Theft Auto V have taken it to a new level. Players will instead of playing against each other, take up a role as a citizen of Los Santos, living out their lives in the game. Personally, GTA Online roleplay always felt a bit like watching the movie Free Guy, as each player lived out the life of an NPC in a game world.
This also gives a green light to the mods that Cfx.re has created to facilitate this community, and in its statement, it mentions that it is committed to finding "new ways to support" the community that has sprung up around roleplay in both GTA Online and Red Dead Redemption 2's online component.
"By partnering with the Cfx.re team, we will help them find new ways to support this incredible community and improve the services they provide to their developers and players"
