Responding to a Call of Duty Subscription Fee

At our sister site,, Managing Editor Jon Wood responds to the news that Activision Blizzard will offer a subscription service for the upcoming FPS, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Today, we got our hands on some information that might tip the scales in the Battlefield 3 vs Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 debate. As it turns out, Activision Blizzard, the company behind the Call of Duty franchise will be looking to charge gamers a monthly fee for access to online portions of their game.

The move itself shouldn’t come as a galloping shock to anyone, given the fact that Activision Blizzard’s other huge moneymaker, World of Warcraft, has been raking in the dough on a continuing basis since that game launched in November of 2004. Why shouldn’t they at least try to do the same thing with the Call of Duty Franchise?
