Apex Legends Mobile will shut down on May 1st. Respawn Entertainment and EA announced the news today, deciding to end service just shy of the games 1-year launch anniversary.
Apex Legends Mobile’s cancellation also comes on the same day as EA canceled its Battlefield Mobile game, and closing the studio, Industrial Toys, behind it.
According to EA, the game wasn’t stacking up, and quality was a concern, so they've scrapped it. “Despite Apex Mobile’s strong start, the ongoing experience was not going to meet the expectations of our players. After months of working with our development partner, we have made the mutual decision to sunset the mobile game.”
With the announcement, in-app purchases for real money have been disabled and the game itself has been removed from app stores. you'll be able to spend any currency you have on your account and play the full game until it shuts down at 4:00 PM PDT on May 1st. While the shop is shut down and you can't buy anything in the game, there will be no refunds. this is a point that some in the community are unsurprisingly displeased about, but EA answers the refund question in an FAQ on the shutdown saying that “there will be no refunds per the terms of the EA User Agreement”.
Battlefield Mobile was in development, and while that game had been in player testing and a soft launch in a few locations, they’re stopping development on the game altogether. EA reiterates a commitment to the Battlefield franchise, but also cites something about the game not meeting player expectations, similar to the Apex Legends Mobile cited reason.
“As the industry has evolved and our strategy to create a deeply connected Battlefield ecosystem has taken shape, we decided to pivot from the current direction to best deliver on our vision for the franchise and to meet the expectations of our players,” the update announcing both shutdowns says.
