Report Suggests Warner Bros. Discovery Looking to Sell Off Its Games Division

A report over at the Financial Times suggests that Warner Bros. Discovery may be looking to divest itself from gaming, with plans to sell some of its games division. It’s a curious bit of news as Warner Bros. Games just recently acquired Player First Games, the development team behind MultiVersus.

The potential sale of its games division appears to be part of its aim to sell its smaller assets in a move to generate cash necessary to service debts to investors. Selling off its games division would have far reaching ramifications for a number of major IP under its umbrella, including Mortal Kombat at NetherRealm Studios, Harry Potter, which earned WB Games the top selling game of 2023 with the runaway success of Avalanche Studios’ Hogwarts Legacy, as well as the aforementioned MultiVersus, and the not particularly notable Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

This is not the first time we’ve heard rumors of interest in selling off Warner Bros. Games. 2020 saw rumors of WB Games perhaps going to EA or Microsoft. The rumor mill spun back up in 2022 with more rumblings of a potential sell off.

Are these rumors more of the same? Or something more concrete? We’ll have to see how things shake out over the coming weeks.
