According to the Q1 2016 NCSoft investor report, Carbine's WildStar is still struggling to find its footing and niche. Earnings for the game were down sharply between Q4 2015 and Q1 2016 in comparison to other titles in the company's stable.
In possibly related news, the WildStar team is introducing a replacement for NCoin "in support of the game's launch on Steam". Called Protobucks, the new currency will fully take the place of the currency used by all other NCSoft titles.
Instead of purchasing NCoin from the In-Game Store (or upcoming Steam overlay) you’ll now purchase Protobucks, and any In-Game Store items you previously purchased with NCoin will be purchased with the new Protobucks instead. And that’s pretty much it! There’s a new name and new look, but Protobucks otherwise work exactly like NCoin did.
Do you think it is a coincidence that a new non-NCSoft currency is being introduced or does it foreshadow WildStar being removed from the publisher's library of games? Let us know in the comments.
