Derek Brinkmann has updated the Shards Online site with a new look at how players will progress skills throughout the game. In essence, players will grow skill competencies through actually using them. At launch, there will be thirty available skills for players to choose from, some aligned with combat, others with more domestic chores such as mining or potion making.
Once a skill is learned, new abilities open up. For instance, Animal Ken opens up Calm, Tame, Shared Existence and more. Players will be able to tailor their game play to best suit their styles.
Think about that list above for a second. Each one of those skills has several abilities tied to it, and each one of those skills can be leveled independently up to 50. The higher your tradeskills, the better stuff you can make. The higher your harvesting, the better goods you can gather. Magic skill high? Melt faces. Assassination boosted? Say hello to deadly poisons. There are literally hundreds of ways you can build your character in Shards online, and there are no limits to what you can learn and unlock. If you’ve got the time and the patience, you could unlock and level up every single skill and ability in the game.
