The starting zone for the upcoming Dragonflight expansion, The Waking Shores, is the latest World of Warcraft preview of what we can look forward to. While some have been able to explore it in the alpha, Blizzard is opening the doors on details for all today.

Dragonflight is concerned with history, and The Waking Shores have been dormant for 10,000 years since the dragonflights. Now, with elemental energies reawakening, this is where it all begins. Players of both factions are invited by Alexstrasza to assist with the red dragonflight, in lands where the elements and magic are resurgent.

In this territory, you will find geysers and hot springs, as well as streams and rivers leaving their mark by creating grottos in the rocks. Waterways and the flowing water are integral to this part. “Waterways feed into the land's heart and the Life Pools of the red dragonflight,” according to the preview.

Since this land was once populated and heavily influenced by the magic that was in the Dragon Isles, you will find decayed and overgrown architecture, further cementing the elements of history in this upcoming expansion.

The effects of the dragonflights on these lands varied. While the red dragonflight led to flowing waterways, the black dragonflight led to construction of the Neltharus, the Obsidian Citadel. This structure, now claimed by the djaradin, is located in the volcanic areas, amid their molten lava and scorched earth. The structures here are also affected by their long-ago abandonment.

Yet, as the elements are finding a new way to flourish, there are inhabitants of these areas, including new elemental beings themselves, along with other creatures affected by magic. The preview introduces us to just some of them in a short video showing them off within their particular environments in The Waking Shores.
