The latest RuneScape Necromancy preview is all about the City of Um. This is a place in Gielinor’s underworld, and will be central to your goals during the Necromancy storyline and your training.

Rasial, the First Necromancer, is depleting the city of souls and Death is enlisting your help to restore them to the city. You'll have to travel to the city to free the souls and this represents the first time players will get to explore the underworld in RuneScape. Aside from going to the river Noumenon, they haven’t offered anything like this before.

Next month when the update drops, you'll be able to explore the City of Um, which is intended as what they call a city for the wayward souls who are still not sure what the afterlife is waiting for and is essentially a liminal space. The souls there are still reliving memories and growing the city, with their collective memories shaping the city.  While it is technically filled with the dead, there's a lot of life to it. The memories of who they were play a role in how the dead exist in the city, so a baker in life might be a baker in Um. They still have likes, hobbies, and skills.

Until the First Necromancer strikes and begins his plan to take everyone into oblivion. He starts taking the souls in the city you will encounter will be pretty empty at first.  Yet, the city will serve as the central hub for your Necromancy journey, with different districts that offer something you can discover to progress your Necromancy skills, with things like rituals performed at the ritual site, resources, building components, and the process of using glyphs and focus objects.

As you complete your goals and retrieve more souls, the city will enliven, so to speak, once again, and the team crafted it as the hub it will be, with shops and a pub and other featured. They're also approaching with humor, and they promise that some of the stuff you will find is tongue-in-cheek and lifts the mood a little bit.

Since Necromancy is not just the fourth combat style, but a whole season and a whole questline, the city will remain and there's a lot to discover at first, but they also promise to grow and build the place over time.
