After the passing yesterday of renowned and much-beloved Professor Stephen Hawking, EVE Online players took to the heavens to light beacons in his honor. Pilots lit capital ship cynosural beacons out in null space in honor of Hawking at 3:00 pm Pacific yesterday. "Take out a noob frigate or sth. and spend a little ozone for one of the brightest minds humanity has ever had." the post said to encourage participation. Those words worked.

Imgur user Cyno posted (header image also courtesy of Cyno) a heat map showing an incredible number of beacons at the appointed time. The bigger the spot, the more beacons are being deployed.

A fitting tribute to Dr. Hawking. Well done, pilots, well done.

From an ABC News interview:

"Here are the most important pieces of advice that I've passed on to my children," Hawking said. "One, remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Two, never give up work. Work gives you meaning and purpose and life is empty without it. Three, if you are lucky enough to find love, remember it is rare and don't throw it away."
