PlanetSide Arena, a battle royale spin on PlanetSide 2, is set to shut down in January according to an update from its development team.

The actual servers will shut down on January 10 at 5p PT. Any purchases which have been made during early access are going to be refunded to peoples’ Steam Wallets. DLC can longer be purchased as well.

“While our team set out with an ambitious vision for a game that combined the massive-scale combat and camaraderie of PlanetSide through a diverse collection of new game modes, it has become clear after several months in Early Access that our population levels make it impossible to sustain the gameplay experience we envisioned.”

We previewed PlanetSide Arena, with Managing Editor Joseph Bradford having this to say,

“But, PlanetSide Arena feels different than the other battle royales on the market right now. While it’s thrilling to be in a firefight in PUBG, there was something about coordinating the defense of a ridge with eleven other people, calling targets and painting tanks with rockets from afar. Spending a good two hours with my eyes firmly on the horizon and not scouring the ground for more gear kept me even more engaged.”
