With the Early Access game moving into its third major phase, called “Verse 3,” sandbox survival MMORPG Pax Dei has announced in its latest post that it’ll be moving away from a mandatory subscription model, as well as adding beginner-friendly areas to help players adapt.

The new subscription model involves a tier called the Premium Membership, which entitles players to personal plots, which were part of the Pax Dei Early Access mechanics, as well as other benefits yet to be seen. Different levels of the Premium Membership will let players pick different numbers of plots to build, and all players will get a month of it with one plot upon purchase.

However, these built plots will disappear if the membership lapses, with items being placed in the Redeeming Queue, so players will need to maintain their memberships to hold onto their hard construction work.

As part of the new game experience, Mainframe also announced that there’ll be starter zones, called the Petra Dei spawning zones, where players will be dropped off upon character creation. This area will have new starting crafting stations that allow Tier 1 items to be made, as well as a small amount of private storage shared across all characters on a shard/world in Petra Dei’s altars.

For players who won’t be paying for a plot, the hope is that this storage and these areas will provide some shard-wide playability for players. However, it seems that gameplay will still heavily center around the paid-for plots, with clans permitting certain permissions on these plots as well as the gold economy allowing independent trade.

Founders who bought in during Early Access will automatically get the game, as well as a free month of the new Premium Membership, with plot numbers corresponding to which pack they got.

It’s unclear at this point if Verse 3, which has enough changes to warrant a massive, game-wide wipe already, will launch this model, but it certainly will change the foundation for Pax Dei in the long run.
