Path of Exile’s latest expansion, Necropolis, released on Friday, bringing haunted monsters, new and Unique items, exorcisms to craft new items, and more in the ARPG.

Based on the title, you’ve probably got some idea of what the tone will be for Necropolis. You’ll get to help Undertaker Arimor with some tasks, namely, to detect restless wraiths haunting the monsters of Wraeclast and to take care of the issue. A special lantern, the Lantern of Arimor, lets you not only detect the spirits that haunt the monster, but it lets you manipulate them. Once you get control, you can actually decide which monsters the spirits haunt. Special monster packs so you can detect distinct monsters with special rewards. And the spirits aren’t all bad, some of them are Devoted, and will grant you buffs and items.

You’ll get to use the corpses of the haunted monsters that you slay, bury them, and exorcise them. Do that successfully, and you can forge items out of their souls. This version of crafting will be haunted indeed because you can bury all kinds of haunted monsters and if you do that, exorcise them to get different crafting modifiers and use them to create items you want.

Different types do mean different items and modifiers, so again, being strategic is important. If you manage to find, and slay, monsters haunted by the spirits of the Eternal Empire bloodlines, you get a shot at new Uniques. There are 14 new Unique items in the expansion, and five of them are only obtainable through the Necropolis League.

The expansion also provides a number of significant progression updates. Unlock up to two new Atlas Passive Skill trees to turn your endgame experience. Speaking of endgame,  there's an entire new tier of endgame difficulty: Tier 17 maps, with completely new bosses, harder monsters, new rewards. Grinding Gear Games calls these the pinnacle of the most difficult boss encounters.

Necropolis is out now for Path of Exile, with more additions, including new gems, new skills to learn, and the Necropolis League awaiting challengers.
