It’s safe to say Path of Exile’s mythos is flush with lore. Recently, Senior Narrative Designer Nick gave some insight into the lore behind Atlas.
The post touches on Atlas of Worlds, War for the Atlas, Conqueror’s of the Atlas, and what’s coming next. Atlas of Worlds was admittedly a bit light on narrative, but introduced Shaper Quotes read by the Shaper.
War for the Atlas then took what Atlas of Worlds provided and built out from it. Nick argues that this endgame expansion was probably the most narratively complete because it was able to build upon Atlas of Worlds.
Conquerors of the Atlas is the newest of these expansions having released in 2019. Overall, Nick explains that he did enjoy Conquerors of the Atlas, but it did not have the same clarity of Atlas of Worlds.
Looking ahead, Nick outlines a few goals for 3.13 including,
“We want to reintroduce some of the ominousness that came with the eldritch feel of the Shaper and Elder. We also want to inject more story into regular mapping with an element of unpredictability.”
