Paradox Interactive is developing Europa Universalis V, the latest entry in its 25-year old franchise. Built upon their decades of experience creating grand strategy games and historical titles, Europa Universalis V promises to be the biggest and most in-depth entry in the series yet.

Paradox has been dropping hints for a while, under "Project Caesar". The game has been in development for 5 years by Paradox Tinto, and incorporates feedback from the Paradox brand of strategy and Europa Universalis fans.

The campaign will start in 1337, notable for being the opening of the Hundred Years’ War, and a highlight of the late Medieval era.

Choose from hundreds of different societies. Be an emperor, a warlord, maybe a local chieftain. More options are baked into this new era, which features a larger and more accurate map projection and a greater number of nations available. Paradox has crafted more detailed topographical features too. For the fifth entry in the classic series, they're going big.

One major shift announced is a population-based system. That replaces the province-based system of earlier games. You'll see the population of each province in detail to manage things like cultural tensions or religious tensions in the realm, estates, and keeping track of Populations needs and desires. Trade systems have also been expanded  with even more strategic depth as Paradox expands and evolves the series.

Of course, there are familiar and expanded features as well. Expect thousands of possible historical events that might happen and you get to respond to, and many decisions to make as you try to guide your nation through global transformation, shape governments, ideologies, use military and diplomatic tools. You might use royal marriages to gain position or you might start a war. Up to you.

Europa Universalis V is "coming soon" andcan be wishlisted on Steam.
