Overwatch is taking players back to 2016, as a new Overwatch Classic event is kicking off, starting tomorrow and ending on December 2nd.
This new event will take players back to the original launch version of Overwatch, released back in 2016. This means heroes, skills, as well as the removal of hero and role limits will all be as they were in its original launch state, bringing back some chaotic times. This also heralds the return (sort of) of 6v6 gameplay, though Blizzard says in a post that this isn't meant as a replacement for any returning 6v6 mode in Overwatch 2.
Blizzard states that Overwatch Classic will see the original 21 launch heroes and twelve maps playable in the event, as well as the four game modes the hero shooter launched with: Assault, Control, Escort and its Hybrid mode. While the maps themselves will be presented as they are in Overwatch 2, tweaks and all, the team is limiting character skins to what was only available at 1.0's launch as a way to preserve some nostalgia.
Additionally, skills will be reset to how they were at launch (such as Mercy's group revive ultimate) and reverting back to gameplay tweaks, such as a much faster Ultimate recharge time in 1.0 versus Overwatch 2. The team is also lifting limits on hero selection for the first few days, including allowing a full team of six of the same hero, though that will be patched as the event goes on to enable single hero limits for the rest of the event.
Overwatch Classic will be inside Overwatch 2 as a game event, so there won't be a separate launcher or installer to run, and while the team isn't planning on this being a one-time event, they do state that they are "measuring player response" to determine the full future of the event as we move forward.
