Overwatch 2 story missions have been very few and far between, and now, we get a little bit of clarity as to why that may be.
According to Kotaku, ex-developers have expressed their feelings on how story missions came about, and seemingly disappeared after all of the hype. When Overwatch 2 initially launched back in 2022, a lot of fans were excited for the new addition of story missions that were coming to the game, but since that initial release there has only been one set of missions to actually hit the FPS.
During their interview with one of the ex-developers, they stated,
“You had designers, programmers, artists, QA, all disciplines, on the team constantly making suggestions and ideas to improve, or trying to do the best we could. But it was all either shot down by a few gatekeepers or just ‘there was no point, there was no time’.”
It seems that one of the main concerns was that the players simply wouldn’t enjoy the new addition of story missions, as the 6v6 battles became the staple of Overwatch 2, but one of the other ex-developers said that fans were still excited about the prospect of the new modes and that those interests basically fell on deaf ears.
Sources also mentioned that the competitive nature of the game always took priority over new innovations which included story missions. This information also comes out just a few months after several Activision and Xbox employees were laid off, which happened to affect members of the Overwatch 2 team itself.
