Space explorers, it's time to suit up and blast off once again as Hello Games has just launched the latest update for No Man’s Sky, known as Fractal (version 4.1) on February 22nd, 2023. This release coincides with the debut of the PlayStation VR2, bringing full support for the new headset, along with next-generation visuals and immersive controls.

In their latest post on the PlayStation Blog, the development team has delved into the detailed changes that Fractal brings to No Man’s Sky. Hello Games has always been passionate about virtual reality (VR), and since the game's introduction of VR support in 2019, it has evolved significantly. The release of the PS VR2 presented an opportunity to revamp the VR experience for all players, and that's precisely what the Fractal update accomplishes.

While the inclusion of PS VR2 support is the standout feature, this update also adds numerous new features such as terrain tessellation, reflections, ultra-quality textures, denser foliage, and increased draw distance. The Fractal update also includes PlayStation VR2-specific functionality, such as headset vibrations, 3D audio technology, intelligent tracking, haptic feedback, and adaptive triggers from the PS VR2 Sense controller. With these features, exploring the vast universe of No Man’s Sky in virtual reality becomes an entirely immersive experience.

Players can now play the entirety of No Man’s Sky in VR mode, but they can easily switch to standard gameplay if they want to. The HUD and user interface have undergone a complete overhaul to create a more natural and fluid interaction experience. Additionally, new head and hand tracking options allow players to grab plants and other collectibles with their hands, physically open the cockpits of ships and exocraft, pilot starships directly with a VR stick/throttle, and even punch objects to cause damage.

But the Fractal update has more than just VR features. It introduces a new starship, the Utopia Speeder, and a new Expedition called Utopia. In the new expedition, explorers will have to band together to rebuild an abandoned solar system for the Utopia Foundation, with rewards that include an exclusive helmet and a robotic drone companion.

Even if you don't own a PS VR2 headset, the Fractal update has numerous new features and improvements for all players. Motion controls are now available for DualSense and DualShock 4 controllers, and the Wonders Catalog now showcases unique discoveries, allowing players to compare their records with others. The game's options systems have also undergone a complete overhaul.

All in all, the Fractal update is a significant milestone for No Man’s Sky, demonstrating the development team's unwavering commitment to creating the best game possible. After what many have regarded as not delivering on their initial promises for No Man’s Sky, Hello Games has continually shown how to handle supporting a game post-launch with many exciting updates over the years.
