Nightingale Shares Original Darker Bound Minion Concept In New Dev Interview

A pivot from an edgier lore

One of the most common Bound enemies you’ll face in Nightingale is the Bound Minion, which you’ll be seeing regardless of experience. A brief Q&A blog with Art Director Neil Thompson gets into the nitty-gritty of the design—and how its concept changed over development.

f the Bound seems creepy now, you should hear how the original lore was going to be. According to Thompson, they originally aimed to have Bound be captured and cursed humans, still living and conscious and aware, but bound by the Fae to kill others of their own kind. However, they chose to go another route, as “it didn’t sit well with the overarching tone of adventure that we believe Nightingale to be.” Plus, it kind of sucks to hit other living humans, as it’s pointed out.

Now, the Bound are simply constructs of the Fae, though with some of those old creepy vibes, manageable solo but formidable in groups. Plus, they keep a few steady philosophies about designs. For example, they should always look capable of reaching more powerful forms; plus, they “signify a soulless appearance, propped up by Fae magic.” The team also wants the Bound to express uncomfortable poses and barely-held-together limbs: “If it’s not uncomfortable, it’s not Bound.”

Nightingale has seen some infrequent since its Early Access launch, which saw mixed reviews. Last month, for instance, it launched its much-anticipated “Offline Mode,” plus tutorial skips and more quests and NPCs.
