Nightingale is starting the new year with some big plans, like an engine upgrade, the first anniversary, a new tileset, and improved customization. Inflexion Games’ Aaron Flynn and Neil Thompson have a new Dev Bites episode with what's coming soon and what’s on the way.
The first update of 2025 will be a kind of small update mostly with improvements and fixes that they say will happen sometime next week or so. They're fixing the Remove Support requirement so you’ll be able to just build some wild and floaty structures in your Fae Realms. They're also improving augments and making a number of other fixes.
Perhaps the biggest part of this update is an upgrade to Unreal Engine 5.4. Not only will this bring this in line with more current updates from Epic. “We don't want to have tech debt accumulating that ultimately begins to slow down our development,” hence the upgrade. Some people may see performance improvements right away, but in general, they're trying to shore up the foundation.
While the first update will be basically just those things, they are working on some bigger plans, including the first anniversary and some customization improvements. Namely, you'll be able to use new customization options and dyes to customize your outfits and make your player characters a little more your own. They're following up on community feedback because being able to customize your clothing has been a big one and it's finally coming.
We're also going to see a Western tileset that also has a clothing outfit coming in the same update. These are inspired by spaghetti westerns, so expect this to have a very different flavor from existing options and it will broaden what players in Nightingale are capable of building. of course, you can combine any of the pieces from the sets together.
In the future, we can expect them to talk a little more about Nightingale City and what else will be coming in the anniversary update. First though, the big engine upgrade.
