Eternal Frost descends upon Aeternum on December 12th, and the New World team talks the new Glacial Tarn Expedition on the way in the Season Four update.

Breaking down the upcoming expedition from lore to mechanics, to bosses, the latest Forged in Aeternum episode dives right into the new content. A level 65 expedition set in the Great Cleave, you’re in pursuit of the Varangian Knight Ser Loth. Loth is searching for even more power, and this follows the Empyrean Forge level 60 expedition. In the accompanying devblog, they even refer to it as “the second act of the Empyrean Forge”.

This time, you'll have to face him and stop him in a colder setting, where ice magic fills obstacles, location, and enemies. Follow and catch up with him first, but this is tricky since he has blocked the path, but Shailyn has a way in.

Expect to run into icy ancient guardians, and ice Varangians, with different moves to prepare for. With a frozen environment like this, the settings and the environmental obstacles will also play a role. The aesthetics of an update called Eternal Frost are not lost on the team and ice will play a huge role throughout. These are things like falling stalactites from above, ice bridges in the boss arena, and even needing to release an ice seal so you can solve a giant puzzle to proceed in defeating Loth.

Before Loth, however, there is a raging ice troll to face down. Ser Loth won’t come alone either, since there are the above puzzles and Loth’s ice elemental. He repowers himself by pulling more energy from the elemental, and then directing it to attack his enemies (you!) and to destroy the bridges, cutting off escape.

You will have to own the Rise of the Angry Earth expansion to take part in this new expedition content, so it is gated otherwise.

In the accompanying devblog about how they built the expedition, they talk about the connection to the Forge, writing music for such an icy environment, how they came up with the aesthetics and the art and look that not only stands on its own, but connects to the Forge.

If you love behind the scenes deep dives, give this one a read.
