When New World: Aeternum launches on October 15th, Amazon says they will begin enforcing a new policy to free up names used by inactive players and make them available for others to claim.
The new policy was announced today, with the date coinciding with the big relaunch that will also bring the game to consoles. Since the whole experience will be cross-play, the new policy makes sense.
“Beginning on October 15, the following change will be in effect: after 6 months of inactivity, character names will be made available to be taken by new characters. That includes characters who haven't played for six months prior to October 15,” they announced.
So, if you haven't played in a while and you really love your character names and want to keep them, you'll have to start logging in with the characters whose names you want to keep before the deadline. There won’t be a grace period. even if you are inactive for more than 6 months, it doesn't mean that your character's name will automatically be gone, it just means that if your character gets marked with that inactivity, and someone chooses the same name as your character, they will then claim the character and you'll have to rename yours the next time you log in.
This system is similar to how a number of other games have done it, although some have added options like keeping your names even while inactive as a subscriber perk. New World, being buy to play, doesn’t have that, so just plan to log in if you want to avoid the process of trying to select a new character name that hasn’t been taken yet.
