A new update to the official PlayStation blog provides some insight into what went into reimagining Final Fantasy VII’s iconic Sephiroth and Aerith characters for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
In Final Fantasy VII Remake, Sephiroth is mostly a character that weaves in and out of the narrative as a haunting memory, but in Rebirth, his role in the story is being expanded significantly, even more so than during the same beats in the original game. Game director Yoshinori Kitase explains that Sephiroth is barely seen in the original game during the events that Rebirth will cover, but this time around he’ll be the “driving force that pulls the story along.” The intention here is to give Sephiroth more depth and tap into his charismatic nature to make him an even more exciting antagonist than ever.
As for Aerith, well, without spoilers there’s a key scene in the original that Square Enix intends to add extra detail to.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth arrives on the PlayStation 5 on February 29. A recap of Final Fantasy VII Remake is available for those who want to quickly catch up before the game drops in a couple of weeks.
