Funcom continues its Dune: Awakening previews, this time with a new video on beginning your journey on Arrakis and where you go from there.
Chief Creative Officer Joel Bylos is back for this latest video, and while the fact that Dune: Awakening is a survival MMO is known, seeing a little more bit by bit is still fleshing out some of what’s coming. In the beginning of the journey, You are there in a very dangerous environment, on a contentious and punishing planet, and you start with nothing and have to figure things out from there.
"You have to stay out of the sun to avoid sunstroke,” he narrates, over a clip of an unlucky traveler suffering on the sands. It's a good reminder not to take anything for granted on Arrakis. You won't really get a chance to since, as the video continues to illustrate, you have to find plants and collect water to drink, because the sun doesn't just punish you and slow you on its own, dehydration is also a powerful enemy here.
Since it’s vital to get through the desert, find a suitable location to build shelter, and to have the resources to craft and make what you need, it’s a consistent effort to survive first, then continue in new ways for ongoing survival.
Some of your first steps also include learning to craft basic tools, like an example shown, a cutteray, that you can use to harvest rocks and build that first base. Using the resources you can gather, and the tools you build, craft machines and grow your base.This also means potentially heading out and raiding enemy outposts. After all, blood is a source of water that your machines back at the base can filter for you.
Beyond that, your journey and skills will grow, opening up new options, vehicles, new resources, and even travels across the desert, avoiding any sandworms if you’re smart.
With a busy summer for games about to arrive, we’ll have to see what else Funcom has in store for Dune: Awakening.
