A new job posting on Hitmarker might just be a hint at a new PvE-type game in the works at Blizzard, as the Creative Director role for an “Unannounced Game” surfaces.
The job posting (via MMOBomb) for Creative Director of an “Unnanunced Game” has some wondering if this means they are curating another PvE style game, as the listing states,
“At Blizzard, we craft genre-defining games and legendary worlds for all to share. ?Through unparalleled creativity and storytelling, we create immersive universes and iconic characters that are beloved across platforms, borders, backgrounds, and generations - only made possible by building a work environment that nurtures the artistry of game development and unleashes the aspirations of our people.”
The rest of the post mentions that this role will take on the responsibility of creating Narrative and Visual designs as well as guiding story and world creation for this new project. Since they are obviously keeping the details sealed behind closed doors, there are no hints as to what this new game could consist of, but it almost definitely is in the works.
There is also a listing for a Principal Designer focusing on combat, with that listing calling for someone who can create a compelling combat experience to "impact the player, enemies and environment."
Blizzard is always coming up with new game ideas, like Warcraft Rumble which is the most recent release, and they have plenty of other titles under their belt like the Diablo franchise, Heroes of the Storm, Hearthstone, and of course, World of Warcraft.
This news comes as Blizzard, and Microsoft as a whole seem to be at an inflection point since the acquisition went through late last year. Overwatch 2 made waves recently as the hero shooter scrapped its planned PvE mode, which was one of the major justifications for launching a sequel to the 2016 hit. Additionally, earlier this year, Microsoft laid off 1900 employees, and in the wake of those layoffs, its in-development survival game was canceled. It’ll be interesting to see what this “unannounced game” ends up being. Just this week, Xbox closed a further four studios with reports hinting that the layoffs won’t be stopping there, either.
Only time will tell what this new job will lead to or what the end result is, as this “unannounced game” could very well never see the light of day anytime soon.
Editor's note: This piece was updated to include the Principal Designer, Combat listing, as originally intended. We apologize for the confusion.
