NetEase is once again expanding, with a new Los Angeles-based studio, BulletFarm. The remote-first AAA studio is led by David Vonderhaar, who is most known for his work on the Call of Duty franchise.
The team’s first project will be based on an original IP, be built in Unreal Engine 5, and emphasize co-op gameplay. According to a press release announcing the new studio and first game, “The game will craft a more intimate and relatable experience while offering a fresh take on first-person gameplay”.
In the release, Vonderhaar says that the new studio is an opportunity to do something different from the games he has worked on and is known for. “This is a departure from the games I’ve worked on, but one that showcases my passion for rich characters, precise mechanics, more intimate storytelling, and plenty of action,” he says. With NetEase’s experience in creating a number of multiplayer experiences, the description of the project, even with few details, sounds like something that fits under their umbrella.
There’s no denying it’s a pretty tough time in the games industry right now, but with a new studio often come some new roles. The team is hiring for their new project, and with a remote approach, should be open to qualified devs from a variety of locations.
NetEase has been expanding in the past couple of years, with several new studios led by some well-known gaming veterans, including MMO vets Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street, Rich Vogel, and Jack Emmert and Mac Walters.
