Naughty Dog has announced that the next The Last of Us game will be a multiplayer stand-alone title, though exact information about what exactly this game will be is still not known.
Announced at Geoff Keigley's Summer Game Fest 2022, Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann announced the stand alone multiplayer title, stating that the upcoming game will as big as any of the company's single player games. It will also have its own cast of characters and is set in a different city in the United States than the mainline games. However, exactly what kind of title this will be is unknown. Is it simply a co-op campaign? Battle Royale? Multiplayer horde shooter?
Naughty Dog released the first concept art outright showing that new city to any who recognizes it, and stated that more information will be available sometime next year.
Excited to share this image! My love for The Last of Us & @Naughty_Dog's MP modes inspired me to join the studio. Co-directing the first standalone online experience, one of our biggest efforts ever, is a dream. Can’t wait to reveal more of what this incredible team is building! pic.twitter.com/nPlZRPtn74

This comes on the heels of Naughty Dog's other major announcement at SGF being leaked this morning by Sony themselves, that a remake of The Last of Us Part 1 is coming to PlayStation 5 in September, with a PC release to follow sometime after.
