MultiVersus Open Beta Shutting Down in June, With a Reworked Full Launch in Early 2024

Warner Bros and Player First Games will shut down the open beta of MultiVersus on June 25th. The team is targeting early 2024 for a retooled final launch.

MultiVersus, featuring WB’s deep well of IPs, opened its beta to a robust response for the online platform fighting game last July. The game also received good reviews across the board and  in its first several months was reaching up to 150k monthly average players (as of September 2022). However, recent reports showed that the dame’s daily player count had dwindled down to an average of about 1,300 players per day.

In the announcement to close down the open beta to retool some aspects of the game, they said:

“We know there’s still a lot of work to do. As a result, we have a clearer view of what we need to focus on, specifically the content cadence of new characters, maps and modes to give you more ways to enjoy the game, along with updated netcode and more matchmaking improvements. We’ll also be reworking the progression system based on your feedback and looking at new ways for you to connect with your friends in the game.”

In order to complete these big overhauls, shutting things down to focus solely on development and reworks is the way they’re going. That doesn’t mean everything will be entirely offline, though. If you’re really itching to play with your acquired characters, “You will have limited offline access to the training room (known as The Lab) and local matches, along with access to your characters and cosmetic items within these modes”.

Since the open beta did include the ability to make purchases, letting people have access to their cosmetics seems like one way to technically keep letting them have what they bought. Some reacted to the closure (for now) notice with questions about getting refunds for their founder’s packs.

You’ll actually still be able to download and play the game, and even buy currency, until April 4th. The current Battle Pass will be extended to the closure date.
