Free to play Smash Bros. meets Warner Bros. fighter MultiVersus launched this week almost a year after developer Player First Games concluded its open beta.

It was a curious move by the studio, but it doesn’t seem to have impacted the game’s ability to have a successful launch. MultiVersus peaked at over 110,000 concurrent users on Steam on its launch day this week, falling short of its 153,044 concurrent user record in open beta, but it still placed it comfortably as the third most played Steam game at the time.

The downtime seems to have paid off. Player First Games has essentially fully remade the game in Unreal Engine 5 and a video released earlier this year detailed some of the improvements the move allowed for, such as improved visuals and lighting.

The game’s netcode was improved as well and the team spent the months since open beta making sweeping changes to the game’s combat, including the addition of new moves and mechanics for existing characters, as well as an expansion of the launch roster with new characters.

More recently, the team unveiled a new PvE game mode titled Rifts that allows players to participate in a continually changing campaign mode of sorts.
