Multiversus announced it would be ceasing operations later this Spring following a disappointing launch, which has seen players express their anger and displeasure at the move. Now the game's director is hitting back at fans who took that feedback too far.
Multiversus, which was effectively Warner Bros. take on Nintendo's popular Super Smash Bros. formula, will shut down its online operations at the conclusion of its Season 5 release, which ends on May 30th. While players who log into Multiversus during Season 5 will be able to keep playing in Offline mode, the brawler has as of now been pulled from sale from all digital marketplaces and in-game shop purchases with real money have ceased.
As is the case when any announcement is made on the internet, players have voiced their displeasure, lamenting the closure of the game, especially this quickly after its relaunch last year. Player First Games' Tony Huynh took to X, thanking players and Warner Bros for the opportunity to make this game.
"Hey all, I wanted to say a few words as I reflect on the recently announced news about MultiVersus," the game's director said in the post on X. He continued, "While I'm sad about the outcome, I will forever be grateful for the opportunity given to us by Warner Bros. Games and to each and every developer on the Player First Games and WB Games teams. Also to every IP holder thank you for entrusting us with your babies, we hope we made the characters true to themselves and felt authentic to your fans. I couldn’t be prouder of the work the PFG team did. Their endless creativity and passion never ceased to inspire and amaze me. And of course I wanted to thank every player who has ever played or supported MultiVersus. Delighting and serving players is Player First Games objective."

However, later on in the post, he calls out players who took the criticism and thoughts too far, namely "threats of harm."
"I know that this is painful for everyone, and I know every member of PFG feels it too, but I have to call this out, you’re entitled to what you say and think, but when there are threats to harm it’s crossing the line. I hope that you can take a step back and realize that this is an extremely sad time for the team. I am in deep mourning for the game. Nobody wanted this outcome and it wasn’t from lack of caring or effort."
Multiversus had an interesting road to its May 28th, 2024 full launch, having released in an Early Access Open Beta form back in 2022, and even had its own massive side-tournament at the Evolution Championship Series 2022 tournament. However, in 2023, the platform fighter was brought offline and pulled from stores for almost an entire year, which may have doomed any momentum the fighter had built since those first months.
