Snail Games’ upcoming space survival adventure game, For the Stars, got its first dev diary, taking us into how the environments, art, exploration, and mechanics shape the experience.

The team calls their game an “open universe” survival game, and in this dev diary, we meet some of the team behind the multiplayer universe. Environmental storytelling is set to be a big part of this, since you'll get to explore and discover ruins and meet alien populations, discover other creatures, and find and acquire resources that can differ depending on the biomes and planets you find them on.

One example of this in the dev diary is how iron you secure from a volcanic planet is going to be more fire resistant and offer different benefits than iron you might find in a jungle. As you venture out and meet other peoples and learn more about their traditions and experiences, you’ll also have opportunities to learn from each of the civilizations you encounter.

Creature and character design play important roles, as to the procedurally generated biomes and the terraforming mechanics that let you impact planets, even to the point of destroying them if you want to. Yes, you can even obliterate one of these procedurally generated planets if you can figure out how to do that. On a less destructive scale, you can also use terraforming to get a handle on particular obstacles in a biome that let you take advantage of what that biome has to offer.

In this, you’ll even learn different ways to customize your ship along the way. Maybe you meet an alien population that has very rustic traditions and another one that's more technologically advanced and offer sharper designs. These are just some of the  included examples that we get, all set against pre-alpha footage that gives us an idea of some of what they're working on.

We’re in a moment for survival MMO type games, and each is looking to stand out. Snail Games lays down the case for why For the Stars deserves attention.
