Sky: Children of the Light is a cozy MMO from thatgamecompany, the developer behind Journey. Originally released on mobile, then on consoles, the game is now on its way to PC.
On its website, thatgamecompany calls Sky a “social adventure game” but on the newly established Steam page for the game, they do refer to it as a cozy MMO. The official description on the game’s page reads:
“From the creators of Journey, comes a peaceful and cozy MMO to warm your hearts. Experience the best of humanity and meaningfully connect with others. Soar above the clouds, play instruments, or just relax and enjoy the beauty around you. All are welcome, especially you!”
Sky: Children of the Light game originally came out in 2019 on iOS, followed by Android in 2020, and then on Nintendo Switch and Playstation 4 in 2021 and 2022. The listing on the game’s Steam page does include the detail that there will be cross-platform multiplayer. This makes sense given the previous platforms, and the nature of the game.
Back in 2021, we published a list of five mobile MMORPGs that are actually worth your time to play. Sky: Children of the Light made our list and Steven described just how different this MMO is:
“Most MMO’s focus primarily on combat, and when you play enough of them, they all seem to blend together. In Sky, you won’t be fighting, but instead, you will travel through many different realms, and team up with other players to find spirits and return them to stars.”
This is about teaming up and flying around the various realms of the kingdom. If you find those spirits and help them, you’ll get some in-game currency and “winged light” from the children of light you find. Collecting winged light is like filling your fuel tank, as it lets you fly further. There are multiple in-game currencies, including one you can buy from the shop.
Sky: Children of the Light is a free to play game, with an optional season pass and cash shop for cosmetics. These cosmetics include things from clothes, capes, new expressions, hats, and even playable musical instruments.
For the Steam version, expect all prior platform updates, and continued work on this social and different MMO.
