Kotaku is reporting that a mobile version of Final Fantasy XI is set for a 2016 release, with beta testing ready to get underway later this spring. Set in Vana'diel, the mobile version is being co-developed by Square Enix and Nexon.

With the amount of money smartphone games make, this shouldn't be that surprising. But Square Enix is bringing a version of Final Fantasy XI to smartphones. It's called Final Fantasy XI Mobile. There's also a new FFXI spin-off title called Final Fantasy Grandmasters.

Players will be able to create and customize characters and be able to take advantage of several in-game features including solo play, improved battle mechanics, community features and communication, party features and more.

Check out the trailer below to see the game in action.

Square Enix indicated that Final Fantasy XI Mobile is anticipated for release in 2016 in North America, Europe, Japan, South Korea and other locations.

In other news, the FFXI team has announced that a separate app, Final Fantasy XI Grandmasters, is also in development.

Lastly, Square Enix told viewers in a press conference that the next expansion, Rhapsodies of Vana'Diel is the final expansion for the game. It will be deployed in three parts, the final piece debuting in August 2015. Service for both the XBox 360 and the PlayStation 2 will end in March 2016.
