Get your phones and feet ready, because you’ll need them to save the world. In Marvel: World of Heroes you’ll be granted super powers, and take off on a journey around your neighborhood, or perhaps the world, to foil fearsome felons alongside your favorite heroes like Captain America and Spider-Man.
Niantic pretty much wrote the book on location-based AR games. After their small success with AR game Ingress, Niantic hit the big time when they reignited the passion of the popular Pokemon franchise with Pokemon GO which became a massive success that still continues to this day. With more than 100 million downloads on multiple platforms, the success of Pokemon GO led to multiple mainstream franchises to utilize Niantics specialized services to create AR-based games.
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite released in June of 2019, but it couldn’t find the same following as Pokemon GO has, and has since been shut down. Now, Niantic hopes to find success in the popular Marvel franchise with World of Heroes. The game is currently slated for 2023, but those that are interested in getting in early can apply on the official site by pre-registering. The game announced alongside a trailer that depicts players wielding different powers such as Cyclops’ eye beams, Doctor Strange’s Magic, Thor’s Hammer, and more.
Not much else has been divulged on the game at this time. If history is any indication of what we can expect, Marvel fans will be taking to the streets to battle villains together, or maybe they’ll find themselves heading to unique landmarks throughout their city to find special characters or resources. While it is still too early to tell what exactly we can expect from the combat and capture nature of Marvel: World of Heroes I think it’s safe to say that Niantic will make it approachable for all ages.
