Magic: The Gathering's 30th Anniversary Brings Fallout, Assasin's Creed, and Final Fantasy-themed Cards To The Card Game

Magic: The Gathering is celebrating its 30th anniversary this weekend at Gen Con, and Wizards of the Coast is celebrating by announcing more universe cross-overs for the legendary card game.

We've seen multiple universe crossovers in Magic: The Gathering, most recently the excellent Tales of Middle-earth set, but during Gen Con 2023 this weekend, we're seeing Wizards dive even deeper into this idea with decks themed after Bethesda's Fallout series, as well as bringing Square Enix's Final Fantasy series to the game. Not to be outdone, the Assassin's Creed franchise from Ubisoft is also getting the Magic: The Gathering treatment next year.

The Fallout collaboration with Bethesda Softworks will see Fallout-themed Commander Decks release in March 2024. These Fallout decks will bring many of the most iconic factions from Fallout's universe to Magic: The Gathering, with Wizards promising players the ability to "recreate some of Fallout's most famous - and outlandish - moments."

Wizards also unveiled a partnership with Square Enix to bring the Final Fantasy universe to the card game. This treatment looks to be like the Lord of the Rings and Doctor Who treatments as part of the Universes Beyond segment of the Magic product line. This set, which isn't slated to release until 2025, will bring each main Final Fantasy game to Magic, all the way up from the very first in the series through Final Fantasy XVI

As an aside, I'm very interested to see how they represent Final Fantasy XIV, especially with the large world and eclectic cast of characters in that one. Just a reminder, Emet Selch did nothing wrong. That needs to be a card.

Assassin's Creed Magic The Gathering

Assassin's Creed also sees a crossover with Magic in July 2024, bringing cards that represent all of the AC games released thus far. The set will also feature unique mechanics, as well as reprints with new artwork.

Remaining 2023 Magic the gathering sets

Magic also looked ahead to the rest of the sets coming in the next few years, laying out the ground work for the sheer wealth of Magic product on the horizon. This includes the next major set in Standard with Wilds of Eldraine coming on September 8th, a return to the dinosaur-infused Ixalan later this year, as well as a remastered Ravnica set in Q1 2024.

Ravnica Clue Edition

Ravnica is also getting a Clue crossover, with Ravnica: Clue Edition, which Wizards bills as a "self-contained" experience that sees players become master sleuths and solve mysteries on the Ravnica plane.
