Magic: The Gathering fans are still finding their footing in The Shire, but Wizards Of The Coast is wasting no time firing off the next of their Wizards’ Rockets as Commander Masters featured heavily during today’s Weekly MTG livestream.
The set will feature reprints of cards from across MTG history while focusing on the highly popular Commander format. For those unaware, Commander let’s players designate one legendary creature as a de facto leader, then build a 99-card deck themed around that commander. However, there’s a twist: Outside of basic land cards, only one copy of a card can be included in a Commander deck at a time.
Cards coming to Commander Masters revealed during the livestream include heavily-used cards like Sol Ring, Command Tower, and Path Of Ancestry, The Prismatic Piper which can assume any color identity, and Extinguish All Hope, which has been downshifted from Rare to Uncommon. The Medallion cycle from 2014 were confirmed to be returning, along with legendary creatures Kozilek, The Great Distortion; Chainer, Dementia Master; and Krenko, Mob Boss.
This is not the first time Commander Masters has featured in official MTG announcements, as the pre-constructed themed decks were announced earlier this year. Today's stream did confirm the decks will have brand-new cards, however. The decks are themed as follows:
- Eldrazi Unbound, colorless, with commander Zhulodok, Void Gorger
- Enduring Enchantments, black/green/white, with commander Anikthea, Hand Of Erebos
- Planeswalker Party, blue/red/white, with commander Commodore Guff
- Sliver Swarm, all five colors, with commander Sliver Gravemother
Commander Masters is set to launch in local game stores on August 4, with official preview events taking place July 28-30. Check out the cards revealed in the carousel below.
