Magic: The Gathering is headed to screens in new ways, thanks to a newly-announced deal between Wizards of the Coast parent company Hasbro and Legendary Entertainment. First up: a movie.
With this announcement are few details on solid plans, like what the movie will be about, which aspects or characters we might see, or anything beyond that it's happening. Surely, those will come.
Legendary chairman of worldwide production Mary Parent assures everyone that the IP is in good hands. “We pride ourselves on being thoughtful caretakers of singular, beloved IP, and no property better fits that description than Magic: The Gathering.”
Hasbro is already working with Netflix on a Magic: The Gathering TV show, but this new deal will build up a new MTG universe on big and small screens. MTG has reached over 50 million players, according to Hasbro, and Legendary Entertainment has adapted a number of brands into franchises across film and TV, including Minecraft, Godzilla versus Kong, and Dune.
The possibility also exists that we will see something very new that builds upon the existing game, characters, and more to go beyond what we've already seen. They are aiming this MTG universe at both existing fans and new audiences as well.
According to Zev Foreman of Hasbro, “Magic: The Gathering has inspired decades of epic world-building and creative storytelling. It is a perfect match for Legendary’s diversified approach to marquee IP, and we are excited to work together to build a whole new Magic: The Gathering universe.”
