Multiplayer fantasy extraction RPG Legacy: Steel & Sorcery enters Early Access today.
Legacy is by Notorious Studios, with a team full of World of Warcraft vets. In a press release announcing the Early Access launch, they say “Legacy: Steel & Sorcery is designed to welcome MMO and RPG players to the Extraction genre with open arms – or, rather, openly armed enemies”. They’re aiming for a sense of adventure and togetherness that MMOs give, along with fantasy elements that seem familiar, and then twists provided by the extraction mechanics and action combat.
Every time you start a session, you are playing in an open and instanced world. Choose from different classes and weapons and jump into the world of Mithrigarde to go and explore, gather resources, and track down some shinies. Play solo or team up with 1-2 others to take on challenges and attempt to amass some impressive hauls–provided others don’t take them from you first. The game was designed PvP-first, and MMO style world PvP was an inspiration, though they have built upon the PvE elements as well. Notorious says combat “blends Soulslike Action combat with MMORPG style spells and abilities”.
The Early Access launch build offers two maps, a big epic zone known as The Greenwood, and a tutorial map to get started. There are four classes and sets of unlockable spells and abilities for each. You can level your class up to level 20 and earn traits along the way. There are 11 unique weapon types with weapon abilities and traits. It wouldn't be an extraction title without lots of loot, so this build features over 800 items to start with.
A campaign questline and seasonal campaign are included. Morg'thog, The Cruel is the seasonal big boss.
The crafting system is inspired by MMO crafting, and you can build your own lodge with furnishings that serve functional purposes. The Cooking Pot, lets you craft meals to give you buffs, the crafting bench is one you can augment with class tools, and the ossuary, lets you sacrifice trophies from fallen enemies to the Blood God in return for a Reputation buff. There’s also the bed, which will unlock rested experience that even builds while you're offline.
Early Access is the next phase of development, and the team is relying on purchases as well as optional supporter packs, Founders Supporter Pack or God Tier Supporter Pack– that will continue to help them to build out the game.
As part of the release, there is a roadmap as for what they're looking to add next, including the Wizard and Paladin classes, additional maps, including a night version of The Greenwood, more cosmetic customization options, guild halls, and more over the next 14 months.
