Larian Studios is done with Baldur’s Gate and D&D, according to comments made by Larian CEO Swen Vincke at GDC earlier this week.
With Baldur’s Gate 3 crushing all expectations last year and racking up tons of awards, including Game of the Year at The Game Awards, players have been clamoring to find out what’s next for the studio. Hopes for a Baldur’s Gate 4 or even expansions for Baldur’s Gate 3 should be laid to rest as Vincke’s comments at GDC were quite definitive:
“Baldur's Gate will always have a warm spot in our heart. We'll forever be proud of it but we're not going to continue in it. We're not going to make new expansions which everybody is expecting. We're not going to make Baldur's Gate 4, which everybody is expecting us to do. We're going to move on. We're going to move away from D&D and we're going to start making a new thing."
And there you have it, folks. Pour one out for Baldur’s Gate 4 – at least developed at Larian Studios.
This isn’t the end for D&D videogames. Hasbro, the parent company of D&D maker Wizards of the Coast, recently announced a Forgotten Realms survival RPG life sim by the developers of Disney Dreamlight Valley. Gameloft Montreal is developing the game for PC and consoles, though no release date or other details besides a single piece of keyart have been made available yet.
