Kingmakers, a medieval action strategy sandbox title, with time travel and anachronistic weaponry, hasn’t even released yet, but it’s already getting a film adaptation. Developer Redemption Road announced the move today, saying that the film is “aiming to tell a unique story and establish the IP”.

If you’re unfamiliar with Kingmakers, the developers themselves describe the game, in the film project announcement, as a “medieval time-traveling action game that allows players to bring an arsenal of assault rifles, humvees, and attack helicopters to war-torn medieval England, where they’ll assist Owain Glyndower’s 1401 Welsh Rebellion, via massive simulated battles”.

Bring guns to a swordfight. And maybe some helicopters. And assist a historical rebellion.

Taking on production is a company called Story Kitchen, who will work with Redemption Road and their publisher, tinyBuild, to develop the project. Story Kitchen is a company with talent behind the Sonic the Hedgehog live action film series, upcoming animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, coming to Netflix in October, Amazon’s Tomb Raider live-action series,  and a number of other projects in development.

The companies will work together to build up the IP in a cohesive instead of a series of  separate projects. They are already working with the world Redemption Road has created, along with some challenges, like the sandbox elements of the game. The announcement was made via an interview with GamesBeat, and there, they say “The aim is to synchronize the game and the linear media and give the franchise its best chance to succeed”. That they’re all getting in early, pre-launch, with lengthy lore documents and direct, hands-on work with the dev team, is something they consider an opportunity.

Kingmakers, the game, will support solo and multiplayer play when it releases. Currently, release is still estimated for sometime this year.
