Iron Gate Supports Mods for Valheim, But Paid Mods are 'Against the Spirit' of Modding

The Valheim team has a new devblog addressing questions from the community about mods, including the subject of fully or partially paid mods.

Iron Gate noted that, while the game doesn't have official mod support, they are encouraged and happy that people are engaging with Valheim and deciding to create mods for it. Since there isn't any official mod support, The side of that is that all modding is  something that you'll have to do at your own risk and maybe liberally save, and also that even if you get something to work, it's not guaranteed that future updates will support the mods you have in place.

One of the major questions they do address in this blog post is the topic of paid mods. When it comes to paid mods, this has been a topic, and often a controversial one, for years now. With that in mind, Iron Gate has declared themselves in support of modding. While appreciating the time and effort it takes to create mods for a game, they say that paid mods are “against the creative and open spirit of modding itself”.

The position they are taking is urging mod creators to not put a paywall on their mods and that the mods should be available in whole for free. Now, they understand that there's a lot of work that goes into not just creating, but also maintaining, mods, so they also suggest that anyone can support creators with voluntary donations, but they really don't want to see mods with a payment in the way of all or even some, of the mod.

Another point the team brings up when it comes to mods, is that it should be clear that any mods are unofficial, both in game, and wherever the mod is available for download. This includes in game, particularly on modded servers where mod downloads are triggered. One way of handling this messaging in game is via the option that lets your mod trigger a popup for the player.
