A special new update is coming this month for Inkbound. Shiny Shoe’s Early Access tactical roguelike will get the Starship of Terrors update, which includes the new Star Captain class, new quests and enemies, and a new starship book to explore.

The free update will arrive on August 23rd via Steam. The Star Captain is the game’s sixth playable class, fitting the update’s sci-fi setting. The new class is a specialist in using lasers of all sizes, even including sentinel drones that come equipped with lasers. In an update press release, developer Colin Galen, also notes the class will be able to use “powerful teamwide auras, and harnesses the destructive force that is frost”.

As for weapons, that frost (and laser theme) come in the form of the Chillbazer, with which you can chain damage between your enemies. There’s also the Cryoclasm, which sends out a huge orbital beam blast that damages enemies and applies frostbite to those nearby. Flexibility with the class also means that the Mission Leader aura will buff allies and call in those sentinel drones to attack enemies, and give them a touch of frostbite. You can build up the frostbite as well as drone damage, making the class good for both solo play and co-op.

Inkbound’s next book is the Derelict Starship, a fittingly spooky sci-fi chapter that lets you explore. Beware of the new alien Unravelled that debut with this book. You'll have to be prepared for the tactical battles that will ensue when you encounter them.

Inkbound is also reworking their version of a  season pass system. They've announced that these will now be called Leveling Passes, and The name change is in part that the team is moving away from the FOMO aspect of season passes.

Past progression will be permanently kept even if you stop playing and come back later during a different season. Also, you'll be able to buy each pass at any time, so if there's a pass in the past that featured some cool rewards you want to get your hands on, you can buy it and start progressing on that pass. With the latest update on August 23rd, pass pricing will also change to 1,000 shinies, up from 600.
