Walkscape, a new independent MMORPG-like walking mobile game, announced that its closed beta will launch January 18.
In a blog to players, the head developer “schampppu” explained that the open beta is a sign that the game is playable, but not fully complete. The post expands on what of the game is playable, and in what depth, so that players know what exactly they can expect when they download it.
There’ll also be posts on the official forum by co-developer Floursifter on what the game will contain, including new additions. Already, the developers keep regular updates regarding development via official forum blogs as well.
Upon its start, the closed beta will only be guaranteed for players who have donated through the Patreon or Buy Me A Coffee platforms. However, there will be an interest form on the forums so that other players will be slowly let into the beta testing.
In ramping up their advertising efforts with these new stages of launch, they also made a peculiar but delightful announcement in the same blog: Jagex, developer of RuneScape, has signed off on mentions of the legendary MMORPG on WalkScape’s advertising.
WalkScape explains itself as “a game inspired by some old school MMORPGs.” However, in order to accomplish tasks and level up, instead of waiting around, players will need to take steps via your smartphone’s step tracker. The game does not need to stay running to track your progress either, and more details about progression can be found on their official blog.
WalkScape is currently being developed by Not a Cult Studio which is made up ofr 2 developers at this time. The team believes the closed beta should run for about a year, before they transition to open beta. During the closed beta WalksScape will focus on fleshing out more skills, quests, trading, and combat. Full release is currently slated for 2025, but that is subject to change based on their resources and progress.
