It’s another difficult week in the games industry, as both Humble Games, and 505 Games’ parent company, Digital Bros, are confirming layoffs. At Digital Bros,  the cuts are deep, affecting 30% of its workforce, and a refocus on fewer projects under successful IP..

505 Games has published titles like Control, Ghostrunner, the PC version of Death Stranding, No Man’s Sky on Xbox, and Payday 2. The layoffs were announced via an organization review and shared via press release. Citing a number of reasons, including the pandemic and consumer taste for familiar IPs and playing games for longer periods of time, the company has decided to ‘restructure’, and “will focus its efforts moving forward on the release of sequels and new versions of previously successful and established games, with a limited number of new larger budgets productions”.

Humble Games has also let some employees go, though they haven’t revealed how many were affected. After a report from Sports Illustrated’s gaming section revealed that they had received tips on the layoffs and spotted posts on LinkedIn from former staff, the company released a statement to the outlet to confirm that they have indeed laid off employees.

“Yesterday was a difficult day for Humble Games and we can confirm that we had to say goodbye to valued colleagues. Like many companies this year, we have experienced trends that required this restructure in order to ensure our long-term success.”

Like many companies indeed, since the past few weeks alone have had a number of layoff announcements from companies big and small, including Ubisoft, Amazon Games, Bungie, Digital Extremes, and Cryptic Studios. The latter is the latest studio under owner Embracer Group to face cuts (and sometimes shuttering).
