After over 30 years at Capcom, Hideaki Itsune, the director of the most recent Devil May Cry games and the Dragon’s Dogma series, will leave Capcom for a new opportunity. The announcement was made in an official post on X on August 31.
“At the end of August 2024, I will be leaving Capcom after 30 years and 5 months,” the statement reads. “Thank you for your long-term support of the games and characters I have been responsible for. I hope you will continue to support Capcom’s games and characters.”
Thankfully, it seems he’s not done making games yet—he goes on to explain that he’s just moving companies.
“From September, I will start developing a new game in a new environment,” the statement continues. “I hope to create fun, beautiful games that are as memorable as, or even more memorable than, the ones I have created so far.
“Please stay tuned for my next creation!”

Indeed, Itsuno has a history of taking charge of memorable games and characters. Since his first projects with Capcom in 1994, including a designer role for Street Fighter Alpha, he’s been a key member of the game development and publishing company. Similarly, his early work focused on fighting games, including Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure and Vampire Chronicle for Matching Service (known in America as Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower).
Eventually, Capcom handed him bigger responsibilities, and he capped off the tail end of direction for Devil May Cry 2. He ended up directing the rest of that series and took charge of the Dragon’s Dogma series, as well the original Project X Zone.
Given his success in both fighting and action-adventure genres, it’s hard to know where Itsuno will go next, but fans will surely follow him wherever he goes. What do you hope to see from him?
