Here's How Lighting is Handled in Star Citizen

A recent Star Citizen Live provided us all some more information on how the team at Cloud Imperium Games handles lighting in the universe.

The video, embededded below, takes a look at how exactly lighting is handled via the engine. Lighting is once of the most expensive parts of a game’s technical make-up. And, short of ray tracing, tricks have to be used to simulate the quality of real light.

To that end, the team leverages the engine to place multiple cube lights to simulate direct and indirect light sources to flesh out the world. The video also touches on how the team chose the lighting style for Star Citizen, specifically calling out the Alien films as inspiration for the game.

However, if you’re looking for any updates with regards to actual development progress and roadmaps, you’ll be disappointed in the video below. Squadron 42’s roadmap for a roadmap was announced recently though. So there’s that.
