It’s been a rough week for Arrowhead Games and Helldivers 2. Arrowhead’s approach to its community has been considered a high point and instrumental in the game’s success, but recent news that Helldivers 2 on PC would require a linked PSN account has caused a complete 180 in the community’s sentiment towards the developer in just a matter of days.
In fact, the game has received over 100,000 negative reviews on Steam since the news, tanking the game’s rating all the way down to Mostly Negative.
Things are getting even worse now, as it turns out that Steam has delisted Helldivers 2 in countries where PSN isn’t available. The account linking news has been received negatively overall, but has been particularly frustrating for players who are located in regions where linking a PSN account simply isn’t possible.
While Arrowhead has admitted this decision was Sony’s call and not one of its own making, the fact of the matter is that this is a mess all around and something Sony and Arrowhead will need to resolve as soon as possible. The way things are looking, Sony is on the verge of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in what has otherwise been an incredible success story for both Arrowhead and PlayStation.
